Narrative therapy (White & Epston, 1990) is a a constructivist theory that instructs counselors to listen to their clients' story and story development instead of diagnosing. Using Story Maps (White, 2007) like a timeline helps clients externalize their problems and works to help them see their lives in a new way instead of a life full of problems. Listening to clients' stories without judgment or blame and help clients review painful stories without imposing counselors' own values (ACA, 2014 Code A.4.b.; B.1.a.). During this session, join a licensed counselor and an author as they discuss the importance of sharing stories and how novels can help clients heal. Learning Objectives: Describe Narrative Therapy; Identify ethics codes related to using books with clients; Participants will understand ways novels can help counselors communicate with clients.
