Marathon Psyching Team
Mind Over Marathon
The Chicago Psyching Team is excited to be a part of the 2024 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. We are here to psych runners up!

The purpose of a Psyching Team is to teach marathon runners mental skills to help them cross the finish line while also helping more people learn about the benefits of the field of sport & exercise psychology.

In 1969, the concept of Psyching Teams was born out of a call from American Psychological Association President Dr. George Miller to "give psychology away." From there, mental heath professionals were inspired to share mental training skills.
-
1985 Dr. Maryellen Duane brought a Psyching Team to the NYC Marathon
-
1999 Dr. Kate Hays introduced a Psyching Team to the Toronto Marathon
-
2013 Dr. Chelsi Day introduced a Psyching Team to Columbus Marathon.

In 2020, Dr. Kerulis' Psyching Team appeared in the first ever Virtual Experience from Bank of America Chicago Marathon. She shared videos, interviews, and encouragement for runners to complete their virtual races consisting of various distances, from 1 mile to 26.2 miles. The Psyching Team also provided inspiration for the 2021 Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle virtual event. The Psyching Team continues their presence at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Shamrock Shuffle, and Chicago 13.1.
